GIS - What's New

1/3/2007

There have been several new GIS developments since the last GIS News update. Please review the following news items carefully as some will affect all NRCS-MI GIS users in the near future (if not immediately).

GIS Skill Builder Updates

Adobe Acrobat DocumentIntersect Polygons
Using the NRCS-MI "Intersect Polygons" tool to create new graphics and features based on the overlapping features of multiple layers.

Adobe Acrobat DocumentDisplaying a Subset of Features
How to limit the display of features based on attribute values.

Adobe Acrobat DocumentSetting a Layer's Data Source

Instructions for resetting an ArcMap layer's data source path when the original data is no longer available.

Adobe Acrobat DocumentWetland Determinations

Outlines the process for adding attributes to wetland determination features and the automated creation of the CPA-026E form.

Adobe Acrobat DocumentDigitizing Wetland Determinations

Describes various methods for digitizing certified wetland determination features.

Adobe Acrobat Document35mm Slides

How to use the NRCS-MI 35mm Slides Tool to retrieve the scanned 35mm compliance slides images in ArcMap.

Adobe Acrobat DocumentLegacy Master Photos

The NRCS-MI Legacy Master Photos tool will locate and retrieve the georeferenced FSA master photography as a layer in ArcMap.

Adobe Acrobat DocumentUsing NAIP Photography

Directions for using the 2005/2006 NAIP photography within ArcMap.

Geodata Updates

Adobe Acrobat DocumentMichigan Service Center Geodata Structure

Includes the most recent listing of geodata availability and organization.

ArcMap Template Updates

Updated ArcMap templates are being distributed to all offices in Michigan. A labeled roads layer is now included by default, as well as layers which will support the upcoming wetland determination data capture. Toolkit users should copy the updated ToolkitGIS_Template file(s) to each client as necessary.

Certified Wetland Determinations

The shapefiles which will contain digitized wetland determination polygons have been placed on field office servers. Except in a limited number of test offices, these shapefiles are currently empty. Digitizing will begin in 2007.
Users should ignore these wetland layers until training has been provided.

(Please see Training Updates below.)

Framework v6b

The State of Michigan Center for Geographic Information (CGI) has released version 6b of their geospatial framework data. This includes updates to transportation, hydrography, and census and government boundaries. Updated shapefiles are being distributed to all field office servers.

NOTE: Several pre-v6b shapefiles are now obsolete and have been replaced with updated shapefiles. Affected datasets include:
"namerds" and "unnamerds" - Replaced with "allroads"

"river_l", "drain_l", and "lake_l" - Replaced with "hydro_l"

"river_a", and "lake_a" - Replaced with "hydro_a"

The replacement of these files may cause invalid layers in previously saved ArcMap projects. Information on fixing layer paths may be found in the GIS Skill Builder Setting a Layer's Data Source.

Users may mimic the previous datasets by limiting the display of features within the new datasets. Please refer to Displaying a Subset of Features for details.

Framework v6b metadata is located in the "f:\geodata\local_metadata" folder.

NAIP Status

The 2006 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) photography for Michigan has been deployed to all field office servers. This 2 meter resolution data is not ortho-rectified, therefore should be used as a visual reference only.

The 2005 NAIP is still classified as an "interim" version, pending certification by FSA's Aerial Photography Field Office (APFO). Certification is expected shortly, at which point the 2005 NAIP will be considered ortho-rectified.

Please see the GIS Skill Builder Using NAIP Photography for more information.

Field Imagery Updates

NRCS-MI has initiated two efforts to capture historic field photography as digital imagery. The resulting imagery can be displayed as raster layers within ArcMap.

FSA Legacy Master Photos -  Georeferencing underway - est. completion 10/2007

FSA 35mm Compliance Slides -  Various counties currently being scanned.

(Volunteers are currently need for scanning the remaining 35mm slides. Please contact Lynn Sampson, NRCS State Biologist, for more information.)

Training Updates

Certified Wetland Determinations

A wetland determination training session is currently being scheduled for each NRCS-MI area in 2007. The one-day session will include instructions for the digital capture and retrieval of geospatial wetland determinations.

Software Updates

Customer Service Toolkit

The next generation of Customer Service Toolkit is expected to be released in the spring of 2007. The update will include migration to ArcGIS 9. Additional information will follow as it becomes available.

Soil Data Viewer v5.1

The USDA/CCE version of SDV5.1 is now available for use with ArcGIS 9. This version is not for use with Customer Service Toolkit/ArcGIS 8 and is mainly intended for use by MLRA soil scientists only. Users should contact ITS to arrange installation.

DRG Tools for ArcMap 9

The ArcMap "DRG Tools" and "No Data" utilities are now available for ArcMap 9. ITS will load these utilities on request. As with SDV5.1, this version is not intended for use with Toolkit/ArcGIS 8.
