Three Areas in Michigan Selected for
USDA Conservation Initiative
Areas located in NW lower peninsula and Thumb
EAST LANSING – July 8, 2009 – Three areas in Michigan are eligible for over $1
million in U.S. Department of Agriculture financial assistance to address local
natural resource concerns. The funding is the result of three conservation
organizations being selected to participate in the USDA’s Cooperative
Conservation Partnership Initiative.
Proposals from the The Nature
Conservancy, the Conservation Resource Alliance and the Huron Conservation
District were selected. The Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative is
administered by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. The
organizations will not receive any direct funding from the initiative but NRCS
will set aside about $1.1 million in financial assistance from its existing
conservation programs.
Financial assistance will be
available to rural landowners, agricultural producers and American Indian tribes
in areas designated by the three participating organizations. Applications for
financial assistance through the Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative
will be accepted from July 13 until July 29 at local USDA Service Centers.
Financial assistance will be available through the NRCS Environmental Quality
Incentives program and Wildlife Habitat Incentives program. The financial
assistance from NRCS will cover an estimated 75 percent of the cost for
installing conservation practices designed to protect water, soil, air and
wildlife resources.
